CJ 833 under 27.3.1794 a Johann Philip Anhuyser is mentioned as priviledged burgher-butcher. This was perhaps a son of Johann Philipp A. and identical with Johann Philipp Anhuyser who died at Tulbagh in 1796 (according to Mr. C.R. Venter at Tulbagh). • BECKER, Peter (S). - Königsberg. *1673, arr. 1695 as so., loaned as farmhand in same year, b. 1697, farmer at Drakenstein. ~Jannetjie de Klerk, wid. Andries Gous. 6 children: Hester, Helena, Stephanus, Dorothea Maria, Martinus, Catharina Margaretha. In 1701 sentenced to be exiled for ten years to Mauritius, for having assaulted the cornet of the burgher-dragoons, Jan Stevens Botma. But he escaped to the interior. In 1710 he was back at Drakenstein. Sentenced in same year to 4 years'hard labour and subsequent banishment to Europe for bestial ill-treatment of his slave, Maria of Ceylon. In Europe, he re-entered the service of the Company and returned, in 1717, to the Cape. At his arrival he was sentenced to be exiled for life to Robben Island, where he died between June 1742 and June 1747. Der Ehe entsproß ein Kind. Nach dem Tod seiner Gattin vermählte sich von Eeden am 13. Juni 1688 mit Anna Russaar, die ihn mit fünf Nachkommen beschenkte. Er wurde Bürger in Stellenbosch und starb 1704.

  (From/Aus "Kulturanteil": Johann Gabriel EXTER wurde am 11. Juni 1744 als "Herrn Heinrich Exter, Stadt- und Zinnschreiber, und seiner Eheliebste, Dorothea Salomea, Söhnlein" zu Zweibrücken geboren (1331). Er verdingte sich der HOK und wurde 1779 mit dem Schiffe "De Vrouwe Antonietta Coenradina" nach Südafrika geschickt. Dort hatte er eine glänzende Laufbahn; er wurde sofort nach seiner Ankunft Schreibgehilfe, 1782 Assistent, 1785 Sekretär des Staatsanwaltes und im folgenden Jahre - er hatte inzwischen den Rang eines Unterkaufmannes beantragt - Kommissarischer Staatsanwalt. Als solcher leitete er Untersuchungen und stellte, wenn sich gesetzwidrige Handlungen offenbarten, Strafantrag. Am 27. Januar 1788 hatte er die Holländerin Lodewica Jacoba Stakman, die aus Vlissingen stammte und ihm zwei Erben schenkte, geheiratet; er verschied nach zehnjähriger Ehe.

  (From/Aus "Kulturanteil": Matthäus von EITZEN, (1013) aus dem Oldenburger Land (1014) landete 1758 als Soldat von der "Renswoude". Er leistete von 1761 ab Dienste als Klempner und verstand sich auf das Bauen von Mühlen und Pumpen. Aletta Josina Luyt vom Kap wurde am 11.Dezember 1763 seine Gattin. Mehrere Jahre später löste von Eitzen seinen Vertrag mit der H.O.K. 1781 unterzeichnete er eine Eingabe vieler Bürger, in der die neu eingeführten Steuern als zu hoch bezeichnet wurden. Er war um diese Zeit Pächter der Windmühle, die die Bürger versorgte. Im Jahre 1783 erklärten die Bürgerräte anläßlich der Inbetriebsetzung einer weiteren Mühle, daß von Eitzen seinen Posten zur vollen Zufriedenheit der Allgemeinheit verwaltet habe, daß nicht eine einzige Klage über ihn gehört worden sei und daß daher der politische Rat daher eine Verlängerung des Pachtvertrages mit ihm zustimmen möge.   (From/Aus "Kulturanteil": Karl August FREISLICH wurde am 11. Dezember 1738 als Sohn des Kapellmeisters und ersten Organisten an der Oberpfarrkirche Johann Balthasar Christian Freislich (1029) und dessen Ehefrau Johanna Justina Louisa zu Danzig getauft (1030). Die H.O.K. sandte ihn als 21 jährigen Matrosen auf der "Scholtenburg" nach dem Kap, wo er nach dreijähriger Anwesenheit zum Schreiber aufrückte. Seine Trauung mit der Holländerin Johanna Margaretha van der Stap fand am 13. Oktober 1765 statt. Zehn Jahre später wurde er auf seinen Wunsch seiner Vertragsverpflichtungen enthoben. Er erlangte 1780 die Bürgerpapiere, arbeitete als Bevollmächtigter und Agent für eine Reihe von Leuten und erhielt 1783 das Amt eines Kirchenratsmitgliedes der Lutheraner. Seine Gattin schenkte neun Kindern das Leben.
  1029: Johann Balthasar Christian Freislich, der gegen Ende des 17. Jahrhunderts zu Immanuelborn im Meiningschen geboren wurde, war Sproß einer angesehenen Musikerfamilie und erhielt als schaffender wie ausübender Künstler von Rang bereits in jungen Jahren eine Anstellung als Kapellmeister in Sonderhausen. Um 1730 erfolgte seine Berufung nach Danzig. St.A. 2689, Staatsarchiv der Freien Stadt Danzig.

Als 22jähriger ging er, den Rang eines Kompagniesoldaten führend, in der "Overschie" nach Südafrika, wo er als Schneider verwandt wurde. 1764 errang er seine Selbständigkeit, am 8. März 1788 reichte ihm die Kapländerin Jacoba van der Heyden die Hand fürs Leben. Seine Familie umfaßte 3 Kinder.

  (From/Aus "Kulturanteil": HOYER (766), Wilhelm Ferdinand war zweiter Schiffsarzt auf der "Hector" und erreichte in dieser Eigenschaft 1744 Südafrika. Seine Heimatstadt war Mitau in Kurland. 1748 machte er sich von der Kompagnie unabhängig und ließ sich als Bürgerarzt im Kaplande nieder. 1752 ehelichte er die dort geborene Dorothea van Wyk, die ihm einen Nachkommen bescherte. Zuerst hatte er seine Praxis in Drakenstein. Anfang März 1754 empfing er jedoch ein Stück Bauland mit Garten in der Paarlgegend, wo er ein Haus baute und seine Sprechstunden hielt. Am 31. Mai 1755 forderte der Land- und Gemeinderat des Bezirkes Stellenbosch-Drakenstein Hoyer und seinen Kollegen Wynand Louw auf, Lepraverdächtige zu untersuchen. Es wurden noch zwei Ärzte hinzugezogen. Das Kollegium stellte die tödliche Krankheit an zwei Farmern fest. Auftragsgemäß nahm Hoyer im April 1758 allein eine nochmalige Untersuchung vor. Der Deutsche vermählte sich am Neujahrstage 1758 zum zweiten Male; seine Gattin Abigail Cornelia Nel, vom Kap, gebar ihm zwei Kinder. Um die Mitte des Jahres 1759 kaufte Hoyer von der Gemeinde Stellenbosch ein älteres Gebäude für 300 Gulden (767).

According to Req. 1737-38:91 H.L., joiner, had arr. in 1736 as adelborst. It is possible that these two persons are identical and that H.L had repatriated after 1734 and returned to the Cape in 1736. H.L. applied for burgher rights in 1738, and in 1752 for a plot in Drakenstein. In 1753 he was miller at Stellenbosch. ~1.3.1744 Hermina de Vries, wid. He returned to Germany as a very wealthy man, bought an estate at Kochersteinfeld in Württemberg, and was raised to the peerage by the king of Württemberg. He died between 1840 and 1850.

  (From/Aus "Kulturanteil": Johann Adam RAUBENHEIMER (1192) traf 1769 als Soldat mit der "Vryburg" in Südafrika ein. Er erblickte am 29. April 1742 als Sohn des Metzgers Christophel Raubenheimer und dessen Ehefau Louisa zu Sobernheim das Licht der Welt (1193). 1779 erwarb er das Bürgerrecht in Südafrika und schloß am 5. Dezember desselben Jahres einen Bund mit Dina Margaretha van Dyk, der Witwe eines Zacharias de Beer, die eine Tochter mit in die Ehe brachte. Raubenheimer wurde Farmer im Graaff-Reinetbezirk. Auf seinem Gute Keveec-Daal trieb er hauptsächlich Viehzucht. Im Februar 1785 traf ganz unerwartet der Reisende Francois le Vaillant als Gast in Raubenheimers Hause ein. Der Deutsche und seine Familie behandelten den Franzosen mit so ausgezeichneter Höflichkeit und baten ihn inständig, einige Tage zu verweilen, daß er nachgab. Die beiden Töchter - die jüngere entstammte Raubenheimers Ehe - machten goßen Eindruck auf ihn. Le Vaillant nahm am 1. März von der gastfreundlichen Familie Abschied - besonders von Dina, der älteren, deren Schönheit ihn vollends bezaubert hatte (1194). Im Jahre 1791 hatte Raubenheimer die Stellung eines stellvertretenden Leutnants in der Reservekompagnie der Bürgerwehr inne. Von seiner Farm aus nahm am 1. September 1792 eine aus 60 Weißen und 40 Mischlingen bestehende Strafexpedition gegen Buschleute ihren Ausgang.

April 1762 die Kapländerin Magdalena Ferreira zu seine Gemahlin. Er besaß eine Farm am Buschmannflusse (1006). Neun Kinder bildeten die Frucht seiner Ehe.   Note: Independent research has shown that the full name of the stamvader was Christia(a)n Johannes Rohrstorf. He was a soldier with the VOC after enlisting on 7 December 1756. He undertook 2 trips to Batavia passing via the Cape before resigning on 20 July 1762. On 22 December 1766 he signed a work contract with a local farmer at the Cape. A second work contract was drawn up and signed with a farmer on 27 December 1771. His age is not given on any of the documents. Sometime thereafter he established a relationship with a local women Elsje Smit van der Kaap. The relationship appears to have been de facto and their 5 children - 2 sons and 3 daughters do not appear to have been baptised.
  Christiaan Johannes Frederik was the son of Christian Johannes R. and Elsje Smit van de Kaap. Christiaan was baptised as an adult in 1803 and his guardian gave permission for his marriage to Dina Dorothea Brits in 1805. On the marriage document his age is recorded as 22 years old. A guardian giving permission for his marriage likely indicates that both parents were deceased at the time. Christiaan Johannes Frederik and Dina Dorothea Brits had 10 children - 4 sons and 6 daughters. After Dina’s early death in 1823 he married a Maria Catharina Minie and had a further 8 children with her (4 boys and 4 girls). His brother Jan only fathered daughters. By they early 1800s the surname is referenced as Roerstorff/Roerstorf/Roesdorff and then evolved to modern day Roestorff/Roesstorff/Roestroff/Roestoff/Roestorf/ Roestof.

In 1805 mentioned as employed by Leopold Heuser (q.v.) on the latter's sheep-farm in the Roggeveld, together with his capable wife, of whom the "Commissie van Veeteelt en Landbouw" said in their report (Theal, "Belangrijke Historische Dokumenten," Deel III, p. 327): "Met genoegen lette de Commissie hier op de aarbeidzaamheid en iever van deze vrouw. Behalven het proper soigneeren haarer kleine kinderen, hield zij zich tegelijkertijd altoos bezig met bij haar uitspannen wagen saijed te spinnen uit de wol, die afkomstig van de in de Carro zich bevindende Spaansche Schaapen van den Heer Huizer, door haar was medegebracht. Zij had bij zig eene kist vol gepakt met onderscheidende strengen, door haar slegts geduurende de reize vervaardigd. Men liet dit eenige landlieden opmerken, die aldaar mede uitgespannen waren." In 1811 Sieberhagen is mentioned as resident in the district Stellenbosch, in 1813 as owner of "Rhenosterfontein"in the district of Swellendam, later he lived at "Tafelberg" in the Beaufort West district. He died in 1827, his widow on 3.7.1856 on "Klipkraal" in the Nieuwveld in the Beaufort West district. S. was married to Anna Juliana Schreiber of Reichensachsen, d. of Caspar Schreiber and Anna Tetscoor (i.e. Textor?). • WOEKE, Moritz Hermann Otto (S). - Brandenburg, birthplace probably Ketzin, where his father, Daniel Friedrich W., was minister. *29.5.1743.   (From/Aus "Kulturanteil": Moritz Hermann Otto WOEKE, ein Brandenburger, segelte 1769 als Soldat mit der "Ouder Amstel" in die Tafelbucht ein. Er ließ sich am 10. Januar 1773 mit der am Kap geborenen Engela Hendrina van As trauen. Der Bund wurde durch fünf Kinder gesegnet. Woeke diente zuerst als Bezirksbote im Stellenbosch- und Drakensteingebiet, dann erlangte er im September 1781 das Bürgerrecht und wurde Besitzer der Farmen De oude Molen, etwa 42 Morgen groß, Het oude Molenwater und eines weiteren Landstückes am Papageienberg. Gesetzeswidrige Taten nahmen dem Gebiet, das fernab vom nächsten Landratssitzes lag, in einem Maße überhand, daß die Feldkommandanten am 1. April 1783 in Camdeboo eine Besprechung hatten, in Verfolg derer eine Petition unmittelbar an den Gouverneur Joachim van Plettenberg gesandt wurde. Darin baten die Feldkommandanten Adriaan van Jaarsveld und David van der Merwe im Namen der ordnungsliebenden Bürger, ein Landratsamt zu errichten und den Bürger Moritz Hermann Otto Woeke als Landrat einzusetzen... (1179). Die Bittschrift der Feldkommandanten blieb zunächst ohne Erfolg. Im Februar 1784 wurde ein Schreiben an den Gouverneur eingeliefert, das Woeke und 13 andere wohlangesehene Bürger des Landes unterzeichnet hatten (1180)... (1181). Im folgenden Jahre faßten die Behörden endgültig den Entschluß, ein Landratsamt und damit einen neuen Bezirk zu schaffen. Woeke wurde am 13. Dezember zum Landrat ernannt und erhielt den Auftrag, einen geeigneten Platz für die Amtsgebäude festzulegen und die Grenzen des Bezirks zu bestimmen... Am 2. Juli (1792) wurde der Beschluß gefaßt und der Landrat aufgefordert, sich wegen seines Betragens am Kap zu verantworten. Bald wurde seine einstweilige Entlassung in eine endgültige umgewandelt... Er lebte als Farmer... und Woeke verlor, wie viele Weiße des Distriktes, sein Hab und Gut.
