When the Hermannsburg Missionary Society started sending missionaries to Africa it sent out colonists with the missionaries. This had two reasons:
1) to assist the missionaries in the practical work of establishing mission stations, building houses etc.
2) to show the converts what Christian living involves and to teach them the necessary skills.
Unfortunately tensions developed fairly quickly between the colonists and the Society so that this practice was soon discontinued. Two mission farmers are included in the list, who only came to South Africa in this Century, though.
The table below lists the names of the colonists, together with the year of their arrival. Calling names are underlined. A cross in the final column indicates whether the genealogies for the families are largely complete (80 % or more). The information in this list was supplied to me by Walter Volker.
